Once your MIAM (Mediation Information and Assessment Meeting) has taken place, you could be eligible for up to £500 toward the costs of your joint mediation sessions. This is a government run initiative and funding is available to help separated parents resolve child-related disputes without the need of going to court.
Even when separation is amicable, it still creates emotions, financial and practical challenges, but family mediation is not just about separation and divorce, it can also be about ongoing family disputes, communication between parents, siblings, children and grandchildren. Mediation helps to make the transition from one place to another more constructive and less overwhelming, it can help you open those doors and move forward.
Here are some
of the reasons why people turn to mediation:
Mediation can help support clear communication, a safe and neutral space where people can speak openly and honestly. It helps people to be heard, can prevent arguments and misunderstandings escalating.
Stability is
needed when children are involved.
Mediation can help parents create detailed, workable parenting plans
that prioritise the children’s well-being.
Responsibilities such as dividing finances, assets can be one of the most stressful parts of separation. Mediation helps couples work through financial matters fairly and openly without the pressure and financial strain of court battles.
Mediation results leads to clearly documented outcome, unlike informal discussions. They can be made legally binding which gives both parties peace of mind and a solid platform to move forward.
Mediation will not dissolve all stress but it creates a respectful solution-focused process and reduces the log-term conflict and emotional strain
Mediation allows flexibility, such as shuttle mediation, online and face to face. Agreements can reflect unique circumstances as no two families are the same.
Mediation is more cost-effective than going through a solicitor and court proceedings. It helps to cut out that backing and toing with the legal process because direct discussions are taking place between the people involved. Decisions are made and if required the legal process can then get involved. Mediation is much quicker and is being more recognised by the courts for the first port of call before going to court. Also the voucher scheme is currently available to support some clients in relation to child related cases.

I am a trained mediator and registered with the Family Mediation Council and the Family Mediators Association. When I
experienced my divorce I felt lost, unheard and alone. I really didn’t know which direction to turn or
who to turn to. Today I can say that my
divorce led to a positive journey as my own experiences led me to train as a
mediator.
I have over 20
years’ experience of working in the public sector which has led me to have vast
knowledge and deep understanding of human behaviour, communication and the
ability to give structure to a difficult situation. My skills set helps me
create a supportive, non-judgemental, safe and empathetic environment to help
my clients explore their difference and options, and to find a resolution that
is acceptable to all.

I was very hesitant at the beginning of the mediation process, and she constantly put me at ease. I’m glad I choose Joanne as it’s been a very positive experience.”
